5 Common Health Myths Filipinos Still Believe

From “bawal maligo pag may lagnat” to detox fads, we bust some of the most persistent myths holding people back from better health.

Old advice can be comforting—but not all of it holds up to science. In the Philippines, many health myths get passed down from generation to generation, often without question. While some are harmless, others can delay proper treatment or lead to poor health decisions.

Here are five of the most common health myths Filipinos still believe—and what’s actually true.

1. “Bawal maligo pag may lagnat.”

This classic line has been around forever: don’t take a bath when you have a fever. But medically, there’s no reason to avoid bathing. In fact, a lukewarm shower can help bring down a fever and make you feel more comfortable. Just skip the cold water—sudden temperature changes can cause chills.

2. “Sweating it out” cures everything.

While sweating helps regulate body temperature, it doesn’t remove toxins or magically cure a cold. Your liver and kidneys are responsible for detoxing your body—not sweat. So instead of layering up when you’re sick, focus on rest, hydration, and proper care.

3. “Detox teas and juices cleanse your body.”

Detox products are popular, but they’re mostly marketing. Your body naturally detoxes every day through your liver, kidneys, and digestive system. What really helps? Drinking water, eating fiber-rich food, and getting enough sleep—not expensive cleanses.

4. “Antibiotics cure all illnesses.”

Many still believe antibiotics work for colds, flu, or sore throat. But these are usually caused by viruses—not bacteria—so antibiotics won’t help and might even do harm. Overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat.

5. “You only need a doctor when you’re sick.”

Waiting until something feels serious can lead to bigger problems later on. Regular check-ups and preventive screenings (like blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol tests) help catch issues early—often before symptoms appear.

So, what are the take-outs

Health advice is everywhere—especially from well-meaning family and friends. But as science evolves, it’s important to stay informed. Don’t be afraid to question old advice and seek information from trusted sources or licensed medical professionals.

Because better health starts with better facts.
